| Introduction | The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the National Chung Cheng University (DC&BC-CCU) was founded in 1992 in the college of science. The Department is a comprehensive department granting bachelor's, master's, and Ph.D. degrees. We are strongly committed to excellence in education and research in the fundamental chemical sciences, such as organic, bio, inorganic, analytical, physical chemistry, as well as exploring the connections between chemistry and the other natural sciences. To achieve this goal we have implemented two certificate programs in the biochemistry and material chemistry. The Department currently has 18 full-time faculty members and 4 staff members, over 140 graduate students and 200 undergraduate students. Every faculty member in the Department conducts active chemistry-related research covering a broad range of topics at the forefront of modern chemistry. Our brand-new department building was completed in the summer of 2007 to accommodate state-of-the-art laboratories, modern classrooms and ample space for meeting and discussion. The Department also provides a collection of cutting-edge shared equipment to help students advance their ideas and understanding of science. The Department has a long-standing tradition of collaborative interactions in chemical research. Members from the Department are actively engaged in joint research programs with scientists in CCU campus and from other institutes and organizations. Because the multidisciplinary programs are organized around important new chemical areas, they ferment new ideas and lead naturally to cooperative or leveraged research efforts. Members of the Department have successfully obtained funding to establish the Center for Nano Bio-Detection, which focuses on nano-biosensing technology, and the Instrument Center, which serves as the core facility of the University. For those of you who are interested in basic chemistry, or are passionate for scientific discovery, or have an appreciation for the unconventional and frontier research programs, you are most welcome to join us, or at least pay us a visit. We are located in a beautiful campus covered with Judas trees on an eastern hill of Min-Hsiung, Chia-Yi. |
| Curriculum planning | Teaching at the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is centered on the curriculum of traditiona |
| Future map | Bachelor of Science in Chemistry is a door-opening degree, which may lead to postgraduate study in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biomedicine, Pharmacy, Food Science and Environmental Science. There are ample career opportunities in the industry including, but not limited to, electrical devices, electro optical sensors, chemical engineering, material science, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. Teaching is another obvious option. All in all, graduates of Chemistry and Biochemistry have exceptional job prospects and academic roadmap. |

| Introduction | • Interdisciplinary researches in the earth and environmental sciences The department is the only academic department in Taiwan that integrates seismology, geophysics, geological sciences and environmental sciences in one organization. The interdisciplinary researches will help the students to broaden their views in various fields in the earth and environmental sciences. • In accordance with the current development of the earth and environmental sciences (A)Environmental issues, natural hazard mitigation, and energy resource exploration are popular subjects around the world. The market demand for professionals with related backgrounds is increasing dramatically. (B)The department is developing to be an interdisciplinary department; the cutting-edge researchers and faculty are able to be in sync with the world's trend in the earth and environmental sciences. • Curriculum diversity (A)The department provides its students with professional courses such as seismology, geology, geophysics, geodesy, geochemistry, environmental chemistry, environmental ecology, and molecular biology. Students are able to take courses according to their interests and focus on key development areas. (B)The department and the Department of Biomedical Sciences offer a joint program titled Environmental Biotechnology, which will lead students to become a multidisciplinary professional in environmental sciences. • Seismology Strong ground motion estimation and simulation, active faults study, engineering seismology, numerical modeling in seismic wave propagation, earthquake geology, active structures study, earthquake source physics and mechanisms, seismogenic structures and mechanisms, seismotectonic structures, earthquake early warning and forecasting, and seismic station deployment. • Geology and Geophysics Environmental Geology, structural geology, electromagnetic exploration (natural resource exploration, engineering geophysics), numerical geodynamic modeling (oil exploration, earthquake disaster prevention), non-destructive ultrasonic testing, geophysical and seismic exploration technology (oil exploration, engineering geophysics, deep structure imaging techniques, propagation and scattering of acoustic waves, electromagnetic waves and elastic waves in random media, and geodesy. |
| Curriculum planning | To provide students with professional courses such as seismology, geology, geophysics, geodesy, and environmental sciences. Students can take courses based on their interests and focus on key areas of development. The minimum graduation credit is 133, including 51 credits for required courses and 21 credits for elective courses. For details, please refer to the study regulations subpage from the department website. |
| Future map | (1) Environmental Science Industry and Government: petroleum company, engineering consultant companies, public/or private educational institutions, research institutes/centers, and the Central Weather Bureau. (2) Professional Certification: Applied Geology Technician Certificate and Environmental Engineering Technician Certificate. (3) Advanced academic opportunities abroad: students can enroll in programs such as geology, geophysics, geodesy, earth sciences, environmental sciences, and environmental engineering. |
