| Introduction | The inception of the National Chung Cheng University can be traced back to 1986, with the plan passed by the Executive Yuan of R.O.C., in commemoration of the former president, Chiang Kai-shek, and to balance the development of higher education in Taiwan. In February of the following year, 1987, the government organized a committee and invited Mr. Lee Teng-Hui to be the convener who was in charge of related planning and constructing missions. On July 1st, 1987, the university was officially founded with Dr. Lin Ching-Jiang serving as the first president of the university. During the same period, the Institute of Computer Science and Information Engineering (CSIE) was established and was one of the five earliest graduate degree programs in CCU. The undergraduate program and the Ph.D. program started in 1992 and 1993, respectively. It was the first academic establishment to offer a complete line of higher education programs in computer science in southern Taiwan. Throughout these years, the CSIE department has contributed significantly to higher education and performed excellently in academic research. The department was elected as an excellent department of the university during the academic years from 2005 to 2009. |

| Introduction | The all-English PhD program in Cognitive Sciences (CS) at National Chung Cheng University (CCU) is a new doctoral program, formally established in 2013, created by the joint efforts among faculty members of Center for Research in Cognitive Sciences, Department of Psychology, Graduate Institute of Linguistics, Department of Philosophy, Graduate Institute of Education, Department of Electrical Engineering, and Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering. CCU has been playing a leading role in fostering and promoting cognitive sciences for more than a quarter of century in Taiwan, and we are excited to announce the new degree-awarding PhD program, which represents an interdisciplinary integration across many well-developed academic institutes and departments at CCU. |
| Curriculum planning | All courses offered in the CS program will be taught in English, and hence CS is an all-English PhD program. The students accepted by our program will be required to take 18 credits of basic course work before they can apply to take the doctoral qualification exam and become PhD candidates. More specifically, the basic course work requirement include (a) taking two common required courses, namely “Introduction to Cognitive Sciences” (3 credits) and “Research Methodology in Cognitive Sciences”(3 credits), for a total of 6 credits, and (b) taking four elected courses for a total of 12 credits. For the elected courses at least two (6 credits) should be from a chosen major area, and at least one interdisciplinary course (3 credits) from the remaining areas. In addition, PhD students are required to take at least two independent research courses (no more than 6 credits), recommended and agreed by the academic advisor. • PhD Degree Requirements To be awarded with PhD degree in Cognitive Sciences, students of the CS program must: 1. Meet the basic course requirements of 18 credits. 2. Pass the Ph.D. qualification exam approved by an evaluation committee comprising at least three faculty members from within and/or outside the CS program; the exam will be administered in the general form of knowledge assessment or any other form agreed upon and approved by committee members.(Students who have passed the qualification exam are considered as PhD candidates.) 3. Submit a dissertation proposal after passing the qualification exam, and get the proposal approved by the PhD dissertation committee, which should comprise at least five faculty members from within and/or outside the CS program. 4. Submit and orally defend the doctoral dissertation in front of the PhD dissertation committee, which should comprise at least five faculty members from within and/or outside the CS program. 5. Complete at least one first-authored (or corresponding author) or two second-authored published journal articles prior to oral defense of dissertation. (For more details, see http://www.cogsci.ccu.edu.tw/programs.php) |
| Future map | 1. Providing a diverse and rich learning environment for CS students to have first-hand global village experiences. 2. Nurturing and cultivating CS students’ professional skills and knowledge in cognitive sciences and the related fields. 3. Empowering CS students with the required training and skills to pursue (a) teaching and positions in colleges and universities, (b) R&D positions in industries where humans as end users are the main concern of manufactured goods and products. |
